Letter, Jan. 21, 1866 from Southworth to "My Dear Sir," while she was at Prospect College in Georgetown, D.C. discusses General Baker having bought letters of Jefferson Davis that discuss the assassination of Lincoln. One undated letter from an unknown writer to Forest Sweet, discusses the improbability of such letters existing. Second undated letter from Southworth discusses one of her stories and its lack of popularity with the readers and her reasons for not believing that General Baker is participating in the writing of his autobiography.

Baker was born in Stafford, New York, on October 13, 1826. He became a mechanic, moved to Michigan in 1839, returned to New York in 1848, moved to California in 1853, and was a San Francisco vigilante in 1856. He moved to the District of Columbia in 1861.
